Overwatch League Commissioner Nate Nanzer revealed how many teams the league is looking to have in future seasons.

The Commissioner of the Overwatch League, Nate Nanzer, stated in an interview with Inven Global that the league's goal is to have 28 teams from around the world sometime in the future. When asked how close the Overwatch League was achieving their goal of being like traditional sports leagues, Nate Nanzer revealed the league's plan for expansion for future seasons.

"I think we’re off to a good start. To actually realize our vision and goals, we are going to need more teams around the world. We will be starting conversations about season 2 expansion teams and we’re really focused on additional teams in Asia and Europe. Eventually our goal is to have around 28 teams around the world."

There are currently 12 teams in the league, with three being international. However, only one of the three international teams is owned by an organization in their own region with the Shanghai Dragons and their parent company NetEase. The London Spitfire are owned by North American esports organization Cloud9, while the Seoul Dynasty are owned by KSV eSports, an esports team management company based in the United States. It seems with the majority of teams being based in North America, the Overwatch League will be focused on having as many of the potential 16 new teams be based in Europe and Asia.

Many of the traditional sports leagues in the United States have close to around 30 teams participating in them, so the Overwatch League expanding to 28 teams is not a unrealistic number, especially with the massive success of the league in its first season. There are likely many investors who are waiting to get their chance to stake their claim in the esports league that is looking to become the top dog in the industry.
